Honorary Conductor
Honorary Conductor of Krakow Philharmonic, Artistic Director of Orquesta Sinfónica de Navarra in Pampeluna. From January 2002 till August 2013 he was Managing and Artistic Director of National Philharmonic in Warsaw. In the same period, he recorded several dozen compositions on more than 50 CDs (almost 40 under the NAXOS label), as well as recording the Chopin Piano Competition finales with Warsaw Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra.
He is one of Poland’s leading conductors of his generation. A graduate of Krakow’s State Higher School of Music in conducting under Henryk Czyż. When Antoni Wit completed his studies, Witold Rowicki retained him as an assistant at the National Philharmonic. In subsequent years, Wit went on to conduct the Poznań Philharmonic and to work closely with Warsaw’s Grand Theatre. In 1974 he became artistic director of the Pomeranian Philharmonic (until 1977), and later assumed the position of director of the Orchestra and Choir of Polish Radio and Television in Krakow (1977–83). In 1983 he became the managing and artistic director of the Polish Radio National Symphony Orchestra in Katowice, a position he would retain for 17 years. Additionally, between 1987 and 1992 he was the artistic director, and later a guest conductor of the Orquesta Filarmónica de Gran Canaria. In 2010, he conducted the inauguration concert for the 2010/2011 Concert Season and the National Philharmonic, ushering in the 16th edition of the International Chopin Competition.
Antoni Wit has conducted in many major traditional and contemporary music institutions. He has performed with the Berliner Philharmoniker, the Staatskapelle Dresden, the Accademia di Santa Cecilia (Rome), the BBC London, the Philharmonia (London), the London Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Tonhalle-Orchester. On 3rd October 2015, in London he conducted the BBC Orchestra leading the concert of Górecki's works within the framework of Total Immersion Henryk Górecki. In April 2016 he conducted the Cleveland Orchestra.
Antoni Wit was also Professor of Conducting at the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music in Warsaw. His students have won numerous top prizes in music competitions in Poland and worldwide.
